March-Festival of Mowing the Lawn
At the beginning of the March, the millet gradually grow strong and tall. At the same time, the cultivated lands are grass-grown, so the first thing is to mow the lawn.
First, pull out six stems of millet and pray and speak out the words of” hope the millet will grow without a hitch and grow many grain”. Then they plant the six stems of millet back. Because Bunun has different associations, and every association has different ways to held this ceremony. For example, they have one that use rooster to be the sacrificial offers. The priest uses millet to be the torch, and burns out the rooster’s feather, raises the rooster up, makes circle and pray. After the sacrifices, the priest tells the landowner to keep the rooster until the time of harvest, and cook the rooster and give it to the priest to enjoy the meal.
They also have one to use pig as the sacrificial offers. They pull the pig’s hair and plug it to the piece of bamboo and dig it to the center of cultivated land. Then the priest prays and speaks the words of “ Millet! Millet! Quickly grow up, when the time of the harvest, we will kill this pig as a reward.”
After finishing the work of mowing the lawn, men get together and play whipping top, they do this is hoping the millet can grow up as fast as the speed of the spin top. Women will throw the balloon that is made from sesame, and hoping the millet can grow up as tall as the balloon in the sky. They play on the swing, singing, dance and drink to celebrate the work is finished.
